Location
The district is situated in the South-Western part of Bulgaria and borders Greece, Macedonia, and four other districts.
Area
The area of the district is 6449 sq. km. It is the third largest in Bulgaria after Burgas and Sofia districts and comprises 5.8 % of the country’s territory.

Population

The population is 343 370 people or 4, 3% of the whole population of the country. That puts the region of Blagoevgrad in the sixth place by a number of populations in Bulgaria.
    Administratively the region of Blagoevgrad is divided into 14 municipalities, 96 city-halls and 280 settlements.
    The territory of the region of Blagoevgrad is rich of many natural landmarks. The felicitous harmony of mountain massifs, river valleys and varied vegetation is impressive. Nine mountains occupy part of the region’s area. The alpine parts of the mountains of Rila and Pirin efficiently match with the round shapes of Vlahina, Maleshevska, Ogragden, Slavianska, Sturgash and Rodopi mountains. All this complements with the fertile river valleys and the defiles of the rivers Struma and Mesta as well as the beautiful rock formations and caves. The height of the particular peaks varies from 60 meters to 2 914 meters.

Geography

Climate
The climate varies from temperate continental to Mediterranean in the southernmost parts.
Terrain
The region includes the mountains, or parts of, Rila (highest point on the Balkan Peninsula – Musala summit, 2925 m), Pirin, Ograzhden, Vlahinska, Rodopi, and Belasitsa. There are two major rivers – Struma and Mesta, with population concentrations along their valleys. The beautiful and preserved environment is widely considered an important resource. A number of national parks and protected territories care for the biodiversity.

Arable land – 38.8 %. Forested land – 52 %.

Education

The administrative center of the region is the town of Blagoevgrad, where two universities are situated - the Southwest University “Neofit Rilski” and the American University in Bulgaria, where 19000 students study their education.
